# Cloudflare Tunnel alternatives for sharing localhost

What to use instead of a trycloudflare.com quick tunnel or a named tunnel, and what you give up.

To keep the app off a public URL with no account, use qURL™: each link works once and expires within 24 hours. For a stable URL without moving your domain to Cloudflare, use ngrok or Tailscale Funnel. For people on your tailnet, use Tailscale Serve. Keep named tunnels for production hostnames behind Cloudflare Access.

Facts checked October 1, 2026, each value linked to its source. [Full dataset](https://layerv.ai/compare/localhost-tunnels/).

## Why people look for Cloudflare Tunnel alternatives

- A public URL. A quick tunnel’s trycloudflare.com hostname is open to anyone who has it, unless you set --allowed-mail.
- A new hostname each run, and the URL works until cloudflared stops, with no expiry of its own.
- Quick tunnels do not support Server-Sent Events and allow 200 in-flight requests; Cloudflare describes them as for testing and development.
- A stable hostname means a named tunnel, which needs a Cloudflare account and your domain on Cloudflare.

## Each alternative

1. ### qURL CLI Made by LayerV

**Best for:** Showing your app to a person or a coding agent with no account and no public URL.

**Trade-off vs Cloudflare Tunnel:** Not for webhooks or public APIs; no raw TCP.
Command to the first shareable URL `qurl publish http://127.0.0.1:3000 qurl share <CRID>`
[All qURL CLI facts →](https://layerv.ai/compare/localhost-tunnels/#tool-qurl)
2. ### ngrok (free plan)

**Best for:** A stable public URL without a domain, plus request inspection and replay.

**Trade-off vs Cloudflare Tunnel:** Needs an account and authtoken; free browser traffic sees a warning page; 1 GB a month out on the free plan.
Command to the first shareable URL `ngrok config add-authtoken <TOKEN> ngrok http 8080`
[qURL vs ngrok (free plan) →](https://layerv.ai/compare/qurl-vs-ngrok/)
3. ### Tailscale Serve

**Best for:** Sharing with people whose devices are already on your tailnet.

**Trade-off vs Cloudflare Tunnel:** Viewers need a Tailscale account and client.
Command to the first shareable URL `tailscale serve 3000`
[qURL vs Tailscale Serve →](https://layerv.ai/compare/qurl-vs-tailscale-serve/)
4. ### Tailscale Funnel

**Best for:** A stable public HTTPS address without a domain of your own.

Command to the first shareable URL `tailscale funnel 3000`
[qURL vs Tailscale Funnel →](https://layerv.ai/compare/qurl-vs-tailscale-funnel/)
5. ### Microsoft dev tunnels

**Best for:** VS Code users who want a tunnel that is private by default.

**Trade-off vs Cloudflare Tunnel:** Needs a GitHub or Microsoft sign-in; visitors see an anti-phishing page first.
Command to the first shareable URL `devtunnel user login devtunnel host -p 8080 --allow-anonymous`
[qURL vs Microsoft dev tunnels →](https://layerv.ai/compare/qurl-vs-microsoft-dev-tunnels/)
6. ### zrok (free)

**Best for:** Private shares to other zrok accounts, including raw TCP and UDP.

Command to the first shareable URL `ssh -R 80:localhost:8080 localhost.run`
[qURL vs localhost.run (free) →](https://layerv.ai/compare/qurl-vs-localhost-run/)

## When to keep Cloudflare Tunnel

Keep Cloudflare Tunnel when your domain already runs on Cloudflare and you want a stable hostname with Cloudflare Access policies in front of it, or when you need TCP, SSH, RDP, or SMB through cloudflared. Named tunnels are available on every plan.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is a trycloudflare.com link private?

No. A quick tunnel’s hostname is public: anyone who has it can open the app, unless you start cloudflared with --allowed-mail, which puts an emailed one-time PIN in front of browser visitors. The hostname changes each run and works until cloudflared stops.

What is the best trycloudflare alternative?

If you want the same no-account start without a public URL, qURL: qurl publish keeps the app off the internet and qurl share prints a link that works once. If you want a stable public URL instead, ngrok or Tailscale Funnel, both of which need an account.

Can I get a stable tunnel URL without a domain on Cloudflare?

Yes. ngrok assigns one dev domain per free account that stays the same between runs, and Tailscale Funnel serves a stable ts.net name for a machine on your tailnet. Microsoft dev tunnels are persistent when created with devtunnel create.

Which alternative supports Server-Sent Events?

Cloudflare quick tunnels do not support them. qURL passes Server-Sent Events, WebSockets, and streamed responses through unbuffered in our published test, and Vite hot reload keeps working through a link.

Can my coding agent share my app instead of me running cloudflared?

Yes. Point Claude Code, Cursor, or Windsurf at the qURL skill (https://layerv.ai/skills/qurl/SKILL.md) and ask it to share the app. It installs the CLI, publishes the app privately, and gives you an address to send. The agent applies the private access rules you choose. For named recipients, give it their email addresses so it can send invitations. Recipients verify their email in the browser and save a passkey; they never send you their email verification code. The agent checks policy support before sharing and keeps the app private if the deployment cannot support it. For one person right away, ask it for a one-time link instead. Codex starts with network access off, so save the skill file for it first.
